Inside the Yoga Sutras: A Comprehensive Sourcebook for the Study & Practice of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras

Inside the Yoga Sutras: A Comprehensive Sourcebook for the Study & Practice of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras

by Reverend Jaganath Carrera

Average Rating:Average rating of 5/5

"At last, a straight-forward, easy to read manual for living without all the tedious layers of mythology and tradition that clutter many other books of like nature. Those cumbersome multi-volume texts can be enjoyable if one has the time for leisurely study and contemplation; but this book is designed for the field under combat conditions when inner struggles between reality and illusion can be extremely difficult without seasoned wisdom readily available. It's a love letter for humanity from one who truely cares."

Bringing Yoga to Life: The Everyday Practice of Enlightened Living

Bringing Yoga to Life: The Everyday Practice of Enlightened Living

by Donna Farhi

Average Rating:Average rating of 4/5

"Donna Farhi is one of the most knowledgeable, sincere, interesting and open minded Yoga teacher/writers that I am aware of, and she has given all of us the gift of another wonderful book. Her deep and profound knowledge of all aspects of Yoga, both from a Physical and Spiritual perspective is always apparent in her writing and anyone can reap benefits from her books no matter what style (or styles) of yoga you embrace, as she is not bound by any one school of yoga. In "Bringing Yoga To Life" Donna Farhi goes beyond the postures and moves deeply into the heart of yoga, the practice of yoga in one's day to day life. Still, you can also bring your actual physical practice of Yoga "to life" by incorporating an awareness of the 8 limbs. This will help you deepen and internalize your asana practice. This is one of many excellent books that have recently surfaced that take Yoga beyond the postures and show how it can have a profound relevance to real life, beyond the work one does on their sticky mat (or mysore rug). Among these other books I highly recommend "Yoga And The Quest For The True Self" by Stephen Cope, "Yoga and the Path Of The Urban Mystic" by Darren John Main and Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy by Michael Lee.

Michael Stone provides an in-depth explanation of ancient Indian yogic philosophy along with teachings on how to bring our understanding of yoga theory to deeper levels through our practice on the mat—and through our relationships with others.

The Japanese Art of Reiki: A Practical Guide to Self-Healing

The Japanese Art of Reiki: A Practical Guide to Self-Healing

by Bronwen Stiene

Average Rating:Average rating of 5/5

"Bronwen and Frans Stiene have done it again! Following on from their encyclopaedic 'Reiki Sourcebook' they have now written what is probably the most up to date exposition of the roots of Reiki. The book offers much information that is not readily available elsewhere, thanks to their own research and contacts with original students of Usui Sensei (through Chris Marsh) and a student of Eguchi's Palm Healing System,(Eguchi was another student of Usui).
The Stienes cover the emergence of Reiki, including its cultural background and other healing systems around at the time of Usui, the Three Diamonds, The Five Elements of Reiki, the Five Precepts, Mantras (jumon) and symbols (shirushi), Reiju, choosing a Reiki course, developing a regular routine of self-practice and a comprehensive glossary of Japanese terms and further reading.

I can heartily recommend this book to any Reiki Practitioner, or general enquirer, who is interested in what Reiki is really all about. For practitioners of any level, it will bring a new dimension to your practice and heralds a welcome return to the simplicity of the original system of Usui sensei. "

The Deeper Dimension of Yoga: Theory and Practice

The Deeper Dimension of Yoga: Theory and Practice

by Georg Feuerstein

Average Rating:Average rating of 5/5

"This book will wake you up to what yoga really is--a set of hardcore spiritual disciplines that lead to full liberation from suffering...if you practice long and hard and smart enough!

This book represents the best of academic writing. Written as a collection of very readable 2-5 page essays, it is as inspiring as it is informative. Georg never compromises his position that yoga requires intense practice and study to reach the final goal, nor does he lose sight of the integral nature of yoga sadhana (no 30 days to loose hamstrings here!).

Read this in a week and you'll know more about yoga than most so-called yoga teachers...and you'll be inspired to practice more seriously than ever, whether your practice of yoga involves the postures or not!"

The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga: A Practical Guide to Healing Body, Mind, and Spirit

The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga: A Practical Guide to Healing Body, Mind, and Spirit

by Deepak Chopra

Average Rating:Average rating of 4.5/5

"I enjoy yoga, and have been practicing since before it was popular! So far, pretty much all of the books I have read on the subject have been the "same old, same old." But this book is different. The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga is really special. It has helped me take my yoga practice to another level, where I can experience much more of the spiritual aspect of yoga. The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success has always been my favorite book in the whole world - so to have these laws applied to yoga is simply the ultimate! This book is definitely a winner - it belongs on every mat in every yoga studio, and on every bedside table for all of us "at home" practitioners."

Deep Meditation: Pathway to Personal Freedom

Deep Meditation: Pathway to Personal Freedom

by Yogani

Average Rating:Average rating of 5/5

"I echo the previous reviewer David's enthusiasm! If you have tried to meditate and become discouraged, this is the book for you. Both beginners and experienced meditators will find this slim book contains everything they need to access states of alert relaxation in simple, easy-to-accomplish steps.
I must own at least twenty books on various meditation methods, and Yogani's silent mantra approach is the most easily accessible of all the ones I've tried.
What I find so useful about Yogani's approach is that the silent mantra can continue anywhere you go. On the bus yesterday I was amused to notice how every sound I heard became the mantra reflected back at me. So meditation becomes not just sitting for 20 minutes twice a day, but allowing the meditative state to overflow into all your activities. Once you have 'tasted' Yogani's gentle approach in this volume, you may want to access his Advanced Yoga Pracitices lessons also. Excellent teachings!

Yoga Breathing

Yoga Breathing

by Richard Freeman

Average Rating:Average rating of 5/5

"Only after listening 15 minutes something inside seemed to shift, a peacefull stilness came naturally...the instrucions are so profound...probably the best on pranayama available...after CD 1 my posture found a natural new balance.
Even after 10 years of experience with Qi Gong,Tao , mindfulness meditation, yoga and Mind/Body Medicine I feel as a beginner with the depth of this CD.
What I really like is the mindfulness approach: not forcing anything but rather creating space through listening: listening to the breath ( allowing it s true nature to unfold) as a first step to also listen to the sensations and feelings ( connected with patterns of thought and images in the mind)that arise...it is about giving space and freedom to what is there and yourself; exploring and allowing the essence of yourself to open...
I highly recommended it..."

Advanced Yoga Practices: Easy Lessons for Ecstatic Living

Advanced Yoga Practices: Easy Lessons for Ecstatic Living

by Yogani

Average Rating:Average rating of 5/5

"This is a book whose time has truly come.

Yogani, the author, ends every lesson and every communication with the following motto, which I think best sums up the approach of this book and the Yahoo! Group from which it is derived:

The guru is in you.

The truth about any practice of personal development, whether it comes from a spiritual tradition or some other source of inspiration, is that no one can teach another person how to be happy. Those who believe they have useful information can only share what has worked for them or pass along what they've heard has worked for others. This Yogani does with a degree of honesty and compassion that is astonishing, refreshing, and consistent.

In this case, the information Yogani passes along comes from the original Yoga Sutras-- an ancient manual for cultivating the magnificence of the human spirit. The lessons focus on what works, how it works, and how to recognize when it is working for you. The practices themselves, though preserved through the Hindu tradition, were developed through experiment and observation over many centuries without regard to any particular religious belief. They can be applied to deepen the experience of any faith, or simply build joy and character regardless of one's opinion about the nature of the divine.

Time after time, both in the lessons and when answering questions, the usefulness of this no-nonsense approach shines through. Yogani has a way of clarifying the intent of each practice, which is to make steady and noticeable progress toward a deeper and more reliable experience of happiness that is independent of external circumstances.

Although much of the material contained in the book is available in the AdvancedYogaPractices group on Yahoo!, it is extremely useful and convenient to have ready access to the entire collection of lessons and the additional material that is only available in the book.

If the 12-Step and other self-help movements were at the forefront of cultural development at the close of the 20th Century, the advanced understanding of Yoga practices as set forth in this book will no doubt form the foundation of personal development in the 21st.

When Yogani says things like this:

The essence of divine experience is unending devastating
bliss and an unshakable silent peace.

He is describing an experience that he and other practitioners have noticed. His claim that this experience can be attained through the practices is easy to verify. When done properly-without undue strain or haste-the practices are harmless. As long as you remember that the guru is in you and follow your own inner guidance as you practice, your progress will be smooth, steady, and noticeable. May you be truly happy! "

Yoga Body, Buddha Mind

Yoga Body, Buddha Mind

by Cyndi Lee

Average Rating:Average rating of 4.5/5

"I stumbled upon a review of Lee's Yoga Body, Buddha Mind in the Elephant and immediately got a copy. I have really enjoyed her presentation of meditation and yoga. Cyndi offers excellent instruction to bring the attention to the breath as an exercise for both the body and mind. Her style is simple and interesting. I've reccomended this book to my fellow students in yoga classes and all have raved. "
