The Near-Death Experience: A Reader by Lee W. Bailey Average Rating: "I stumbled onto this book after losing my Mother. I didn't want to read just one author who might overload me with his own set of beliefs on the subject. I wanted a representative and reasonably objective overview of the subject, and that is just what this book delivers. It covers the full range from uplifting stories of light and love and ultimate understanding on the other side to academic essays on the cultural and religious significance of near death imagery. You get believers and nonbelievers, scientists and saints between the covers of this collection. I read the whole book and am rereading it now. For a skeptic who really wonders where her Mom is now, it is comforting and thought provoking without being saccharine or preachy. " Publisher: Routledge | More reviews: amazon.com
Nothing Better Than Death by Kevin Williams Average Rating: "How does one begin to review a book such as this? We all have been touched in one way or another by the loss of someone we have loved and was dear to us. When I received this book for review I ravished it from cover to cover, however it has taken me several weeks to begin to write for you what I have found within it's covers. The author takes a look at sixty-two near-death experiences and shares them with the reader. They range in topics from God, Heaven, Hell, Reincarnation and Suicide, to name a few. What did I feel as I read these experiences. Oh dear reader, such a mixture of emotions that it is hard for me to express them to you. Joy, sadness, fear and hope are just a few that raced through my being as I devoured this work. Are these true? Did our brethren of this human race truly see into the next world? What awaits each one of us as we walk through that portal? Does it really matter what faith we are or how good or bad we are in this life? That is for you to decide! I believe I already know that answer! To me this book was one that only affirmed my belief in a far better world than I am in now. I smile with anticipation at the thought of seeing my Savior and my loved ones on the day of my departure from this earth. Death is something we will all face. You can't buy your way out of it or talk your way out of it. This book, in my opinion will help to ease your fears and may just make you a little jealous of those who have already made this wonderful journey. Highly recommended!" Transformed By The Light: The Powerful Effect Of Near-death Experiences On People's Lives by Melvin Morse Average Rating: "I've read many books on Near Death experiences over the years. In fact, I have over twenty of them on the bookcase beside me as I write this. Yet, I keep coming back to this one volume (I believe that this is the third time that I've reread it.) The reason for this is that it is the most "scientific" of the studies available to the general reading public. One would expect this of a book written by a practicing medical doctor. It is scientific, yet it is objective- this is no deconstructionist hatchet job. It is a true research study conducted with impressive thoroughness. The results are presented in the text in non-technical, non-statistical language, though the full paper with all the statistical results is included in the appendix.First of all, this Transformations study takes the existence of NDE's as a proven fact. The author's previous research with the near death experiences of children left no doubt as to that (see his_Closer to the Light_.) This book deals with the lasting, measurable effects of the near death experience on people who experienced it in childhood (less of a chance of popular culture contamination.) A comprehensive battery of tests were applied to both NDE survivors and control groups (Ellsworth Profile of Adaptation of Life Survey, Greyson Value Survey, Greyson Near-Death Experience Validity Scale, Templer Death Anxiety Scale, Reker-Peacock life Attitude Profile, Greyson Negative Near Death Experience Survey, Neppe Subjective Paranormal Events Questionnaire, Neppe Temporal Lobe Sensitivity Inventory, Etc.) In addition, the participants complete medical and psychiatric histories were examined, as was a survey of their complete lifestyle and personal history. This was a very comprehensive in-depth study of a type not attempted before or since. The results showed that the NDE survivors had significantly lower death anxiety and a higher zest for life. Verifiable psychic ability was four times higher than the general public. There were also indications that long-term conventional intelligence increased as a result- as well as creativity increase. The anecdotal sketches also demonstrate especially clearly that humanitarian and altruistic behavior was nearly always at a high level as a result of exposure to "the Light."Why should we care about such research? Well, it tends to comfort those who hear about it, especially the sick and dieing, even though they have not had the experience themselves. It also tends to drive home our interconnectiveness as human beings and the need to treat each other with fairness, justice, and respect. It refutes the mechanistic concept that life is without purpose or reward. Oh yes, there is also the fact that it is the objective, verifiable, truth...." Threshold to Tomorrow by Ruth Montgomery Average Rating: Walk-ins are enlightened beings now secretly and anonymously among us to guide humanity through the upheavals ahead. Maybe you are a walk-in and don't know it....
The walk-ins have come to tell us: -- How we can improve our health... -- How we can live longer... -- How we can achieve our fullest potential... -- How we can utilize the unused portions of our minds and spirits... -- What we can do to save ourselves and others during the coming world war and the global disasters that will mark the closing of the twentieth century... The Day I Died: Remarkable True Stories of Near-Death Experience by Tammy Cohen Average Rating: "This collection of near death experiences were interesting but after reading a few of the accounts, the stories became quite tedious and boring to read. A bit more editing might be needed here. This is a book I will not keep in my library." Publisher: John Blake | More reviews: amazon.com
Death and Personal Survival by Robert Almeder Average Rating: "This is one of the really excellent modern works in this field. I can't believe no one else has reviewed it. It is light years ahead of the New Age silliness which dominates modern writing on life after death. The author is a professor with excellent credentials, and this is a serious and balanced study of the evidence for personal survival. He focuses on the best evidence in each of several different areas (reincarnation, apparitions, etc.) and considers alternative (i.e., skeptical) interpretations. He finds some of the evidence compelling and some of it not-so-compelling, but the book as a whole is very pro-survival. This book is frequently cited and seems to have become pretty much a standard reference. If you have any interest in the possibility of life after death, this belongs in your library." After the Light: What I Discovered on the Other Side of Life That Can Change Your World by Kimberly Clark Sharp Average Rating: "One day in 1995 I died, and had a NDE. Ever since then, I've been reading everything I can on the subject. According to most stories I've read, I had an unusual one, not going down a tunnel, but experiencing many interesting phenomena all the same. It seems to me that there are some NDE books and magazine articles that are just hype, and published just to give recognition. I have found, through my many years and multitudes of books on the subject, that there is an underlining truth and spirit that pervades the true experiences. So, I have compiled a list of my best reads for NDE books - ones that I consider genuine and adding validating light to the personal NDE experience. I have left out compilations, these are personal narratives. I hope you enjoy them too.

What To Do When You Are Dead: Living Better in the Afterlife by Craig Hamilton-Parker Average Rating: "I recommend this book to everyone, especially those who either have just lost someone or are terminally ill and expecting to soon go on their own adventure into the afterlife.
People who's minds are stuck on the material and have no real sense of spirituality (or a church given one -- same thing) look upon death as the end. The real truth -- and there is no doubt in my mind about this -- is that it's a new beginning. On the other side, many wonderful things beyond our comprehension await us. This has been verified by countless mediums, spiritualists, and others who all arrived at the same conclusions without sharing any information.
Look down at that wonderful piece of bio-mechanical machinery you now occupy -- your body. The thing that carries you about in this world and enables you to interact with it. It's like your car, in a way. You get into your car when you need to go somewhere, and you get out of it when you get home. You can do the same thing with your body if you'll take the time to learn how. And, like your car which will soon be sitting in some junkyard being eaten away by rust, your body will soon occupy a pine box, on the other side of the grass, rotting away as bacteria slowly consume it.
Most people don't want to think about this, but the truth is, death will never happen to YOU -- it will only happen to that BODY you've grown so attached to. You, meanwhile, go on to another place.... a place you've already visited several times before if you're wise enough to learn about Astral Projection (AKA Astral Travel).
Get this book, read it cover to cover, then read it again. You will never again fear the death of your earthly body. I know that I have a lot of life left in me and a lot of time left on this earth.... but when this body of mine stops working for whatever reason, I'm looking forward to turning out the lights and moving to a bigger place with a much better view. ;-)" Publisher: Sterling | More reviews: amazon.com
Complete Idiot's Guide to Near-Death Experiences by Lh.D., P. M. H. Atwater Average Rating: "The Complete IDIOT'S Guide To Near-Death Experiences by P.M.H. Atwater with David H. Morgan is a must-have for everyone who is interested in the spiritual aspect of death, as well as in the latest developments of our knowledge of spiritual reality. It can be regarded as a easy-to-read encyclopedia on death and afterlife matters. One account about a near-death experience has been titled "Hold on to Your Socks for This One," and the same title can be applied to many of the other survival stories -- all of them are great reads. At the same time, they are classified in a way that expands our understanding of the afterlife. For instance, the authors analyze the differences of how children describe their journeys beyond in comparison to adults. As children are not conditioned by any religious concepts, in their reports darkness isn't always evil. Many children have reported about "the darkness that knows," describing being cradled in a womb-like darkness. The authors recall that light is not always God's light as well. As we know, word "Lucifer" means "light bearer" to begin with. In other words, our dualistic picture of the universe as a battlefield of light and darkness doesn't always hold up. Since the 60's researchers have come across cases of survivors who wanted to report the hellish kind of journeys they experienced. Yet for quite a long time these accounts were suppressed because of the belief that only bad people like murderers go to hell. Regrettably, studies don't confirm it. It is still not quite clear why in near-death situations some people like family oriented community activists found themselves in hell and others in heaven. The belief that a near-death experience produces only positive changes -- needs to undergo a profound revision as well. Some experiencers feed their egos; some change to the extent of alienation; some become difficult to live with... It was high time to reveal more facts about the afterlife and this book definitely leaves us with a considerable amount of new information. In addition, this book gives us an excellent 'further reading' list, a good glossary of pertinent words that otherwise may be confusing and hard to understand, a list of websites and 'get in touch' list of research organizations. There is one more thing that makes this book special -- its positive energy in spite of its morbid subject. It seems to stem from the authors' liberating intention to be truthful and a profound knowledge of their subject. It was a pleasure to read this book." Publisher: Alpha | More reviews: amazon.com
