"I stumbled into this book in the public library a few weeks ago and I'm certainly going to buy it for further reference in the future. It's an eye opener of the best kind! I fully agree with Marc Borisovsky - this is the most complete overview that you can get. I'm glad that this book is available in English too, so that it will reach more people.

First, Hans ten Dam describes reincarnation beliefs in several spiritual and religious settings incl. the three monotheistic religions, hinduism, buddhism, nature religions and recently developed beliefs like theosophy and anthroposophy. The next part of the book contains experiences with reincarnation from different points of view (children's memories, spontaneous and induced regressions, paranormal activities (e.g. through mediums) etc.) Hans ten Dam discusses many questions that may arise, like: the probability of other explanations for the past life experiences, whether we can reincarnate in animal bodies, the way karma works, how experiences and different beliefs correspond etc.

The author read a vast number of books on the subject and rates most of them in the text and in the literature list in the back of the book. This is very useful for further reading, because many books that contain sheer nonsense can be omitted immediately.

Although Ten Dam, a regression therapist himself, is a firm 'believer', he looks at other possibilities to explain memories of past lifes (false memories, fraud, déjà vu etc.) in a very serious way. Also he dares to criticize religious beliefs and work of other authors in the field (often accompanied by a dry sense of humor that made me role on the floor laughing ;-) Especially the chapter on new age beliefs is great in that regard).

If you're interested in reincarnation - either from a professional or from a layman's point of view (and obviously you are, because otherwise you wouldn't be reading this) - I would certainly recommend this book to you. Although the first chapters may seem a bit 'dry', you most probably won't be disappointed :-)"

"I have been learning about and exploring the topic of reincarnation for a long time now. In the past, I have only read books that were full of documentation. Some of these had a little bit on how to discover your own past lives. However, I always wanted more. This book provided that for me. Contrary to the other books that I had read in the past, this book talks about various methods and how to utilize them for your own self discovery. Michael Talbot not only explains how to use these methods in a way that anyone can follow, but he backs it up with some documentation of his own experiences as well as others. I feel that if anyone wants to learn more about their past lives and themselves as a whole, this would be an excellant starting point. I recommend it to anyone who can find a copy, and hope that it will one day come back into print."

"I absolutely adored the description of the author's near-death experience. It is one of the best I have ever read. However, I don't think the techniques she recommends for replicating one's own NDE will work to the extent implied in the title and intro. Sure, maybe one can have an out-of-body experience in a dream, but that is a far different experience than the one she had when she "died," when she went to a supreme heavenly place and felt total joy and bliss. I thought the connection she made between the two was a bit of a stretch."

A Land Unknown: Hell's Dominion

"More descriptive than "23 Minutes in Hell" book by Bill Wiese, A Land Unknown Hell's Dominion takes the reader on a trip to the underworld in vivid details. Both authors Bill Wiese and B. W. Melvin describe Hell. Comparing the two books, IMHO, "A Land Unknown Hell's Dominion," contains more vivid imagery than the other. These two books are fascinating reading together.

Is it a perfect book? No. But it is an excellent read that will make one ponder his or her eternity and seek to improve his or her life now. Life is short, eternity is longer. The author brings out that point clearly in a land unknown.

I recommend adding, "A Land Unknown Hell's Dominion" and `23 Minutes in Hell" to your personal library. However, when one reads these styles of books - one must take the proverbial grain of salt and match judge by the bible what the authors claim to have seen.

I fond it ironic how both books describes the same place and the demonic host there, both authors saw cells and ghastly beings inside a pit as the Old Testament describes. I was left with the impression that they both saw the same place and verify each other. Overall, a great read and worth adding to your personal library.

I also recommend reading, "Hell Under Fire" as a scholarly alternative that verifies these eyewitness accounts of the hereafter of the lost. "

"This book is an absolute must-read for anyone interested in ancient Egypt, reincarnation, astral travel, transpersonal psychology, or even if you want to read a fascinating, mysterious love story over eons of time! Dorothy Eady, a 3-year old child in England, suffers a fall on some stairs in her home and is pronounced dead by a doctor. She probably has a near-death experience, though this is not claimed in the book. When she regains consciousness, it is as if her current personality has been merged wih the personality (purportedly) of a previous incarnation she had as a temple virgin in Abydos, Egypt. Bentreshyt, her name in that incarnation, had a short-lived affair with Sety the First (father of the famous Ramses II), and became pregnant at the tender age of fourteen. Forced into a confession by the temple priests, Bentreshyt then committed suicide. Dorothy, just as the central character in "The Wizard of Oz," becomes fixated in finding her true self, and thus spends the rest of her life obsessed with ancient Egypt. She eventually lives in Cairo for 20 years, working in the Antiquities Depaartment, and then moves to Abydos, where she lives for the rest of her life, working at the same Temple of Sety where she had lived 3,000 years before. Now called Omm Sety, which simply means "Mother of Sety" (she has a son during a short-lived marriage to an Egyptian), Dorothy makes significant contributions to Egyptology as an expert draftsman, writer, and scholar, as well as healing and aiding the local villagers in her "external life." Yet her "internal" life is one that few if any people could ever match! To put it very briefly, she has many meetings, both on the physical and astral planes, with her soulmate, Sety the First. I will leave it to anyone who reads this review to get the book for the incredible details. The writing and the telling of the story are excellent from beginning to end. The epilogue is also a very stimulating, mostly psychological discussion of such "occult" issues as reincarnation, the nature of the astral body, astral projection, remote viewing, even Shelldrake's morphogenic fields, and more! Get this book from your library if it is out of stock, as was shown here when I added this review."
