Richard J. Foster's Study Guide for "Celebration of Discipline" by Richard J. Foster Average Rating: "This booklet is very helpful for ones first contact with the Celebration of Discipline book itself. This book requires 15 pages of reading a week to go along with the 15 pages out of Celebration of Discipline. This is good for group leaders or heavy-duty spiritual growth fans. The exercises makes the collective material a real spiritual work out. ..."
Called: Hello, My Name Is Mrs. Jefferson. I Understand Your Plane Is Being Hijacked. 9:45 Am, Flight 93, September 11, 2001 by Lisa D. Jefferson Average Rating: "Disclaimer: Whoever reads this book should have a box of Kleenex next to them.
I read this book in two hours. The only reason why it took me that long is because I was constantly sobbing and had to keep blowing my nose and wiping my eyes. I don't think I've ever encountered a book, at any time in my whole life, which had me crying so hard and having my heart feel so heavy.
Lisa Jefferson is the GTE operator who took the call with United 93's Todd Beamer and was the person who recited the Lord's prayer with him as he struggled to make sense of all that was happening on that fateful day of September 11th, 2001.
Not only does Jefferson recall the conversation with Beamer, but she also broadens the scope of the book to include the perspective of God's role in our lives and our role in God's life. ..."
Coach Wooden's Pyramid Of Success by John Wooden Average Rating: "This book was written as a Bible study. The book derives many quotes and ideas from several Bible verses. At the end of each chapter, the reader is "suggested" to carefully read several Bible verses for Christian edification. The book does not appear to have an another reference than the Bible. ..."
Heaven Is Real: Lessons on Earthly Joy--From The Man Who Spent 90 Minutes In Heaven by Don Piper Average Rating: "Don Piper was relatively unknown for even a couple of years after writing 90 Minutes in Heaven. But something must have happened, because now it seems that the longer his book sits on the shelves, the more it picks up steam. It has now sold well over a million copies and shows few signs of abating anytime soon. ..."
When I Lay My Isaac Down: Unshakable Faith in Unthinkable Circumstances by Carol Kent Average Rating: "In some theoretical realm we all know that life can change drastically in an instant --- a slip on the ice, a freak accident. But most white-collar, suburban churchgoers do not expect the message that Carol Kent and her husband received in October 1999, just a few weeks after she had mused, "Does life get any better than this?" (Their careers --- directing a national Christian speakers' bureau --- were on track. ..."
Spiritual Evolution: A Scientific Defense of Faith by George Vaillant Average Rating: "Here is what will happen to you when you read George Vaillant's Spiritual Evolution:
* During the chapter "Joy," you may cry as you feel Joy. During the chapter "Love," you will want to call home to say Hi.
* You will be pulled in by personal stories from the Study of Adult Development, and how these men have come around to positive emotions and spirituality.
* You will be inside a colossal head fake - a situation in which you're learning but it seems like you're playing.
In Spiritual Evolution, Vaillant does something amazing: he makes the reader feel the emotion in the chapter about that emotion - Joy, Love, Compassion, Awe, and more. ..."
If You Want To Walk On Water, You Have To Get Out The Boat (Inspirio/Zondervan Miniature Editions) by John Ortberg Average Rating: "This is a book for people like me: feeling stuck in a job you hate, believing that God has called you to much more than what you are doing, but afraid to leave the "security" of the life you have built for yourself. In other words, for whatever reason, you're a "boat potato!" Using the familiar Biblical story of Jesus walking on the water and Peter walking out to him (at least until he saw the wind and the waves!), Ortberg, in his entertaining, engaging style, encourages you to overcome your fears, embrace God's call, and trust that God will work through you to do great things you could not do on your own. ..."
Before I Go: Letters to Our Children About What Really Matters by Peter Kreeft Average Rating: "Peter Kreeft is an outstanding philosophy professor at Boston College who has written over 40 books, most of which are excellent. Professor Kreeft is similar to G K Chesterton and C S Lewis in that he is a Christian philosopher who writes very clear and profound books that are full of wisdom.
BEFORE I GO consists 162 life lessons that Kreeft has learned, and each lesson is covered in 1 to 3 pages. ..."
Glimpses of Heaven: True Stories of Hope and Peace at the End of Life's Journey by Trudy Harris Average Rating: "I've had the incredible blessing of being in the room when God welcomes one home. It's a very holy moment that often words cannot describe. But somehow, Trudy Harris has managed to take us to those holy moments so sweetly and intimately that each of us can now have a Glimpse of Heaven through those who have gone before. ..."
