Layayoga: The Definitive Guide to the Chakras and Kundalini by Shyam Sundar Goswami Average Rating: "I also highly recommend this book as an excellent and detailed guide to the chakras and to some extent the nadis (of which there is no complete guide in publication). It is of great practical assistance to those interested in kundalini yoga and will particularly assist those who follow unreliable New Age methods. However, as an experienced librarian, I wish to warn all those interested in this subject that this is not a new title but in fact a reprint of the 1980 publication entitled "Layayoga : an advanced method of concentration". I condemn the publisher Inner Traditions for not clearly indicating this fact prominently on the item as well as including a false "Foreword to the Second Edition" (the writer of which clearly asserts this is simply a reprint) and so deceiving those scanning booklists that they may be unnecessarily purchasing a duplicate." Vocal Toning the Chakras by Jonathan Goldman Average Rating: "If you buy this cd, it is because you understand the subject. I recommend this recording. The only flaw that I find is that in the middle of the most blissful "tunin out" Goldman comes in with a booming voice to say "Now... Tune into your..." It is startling and it takes some getting used to. Other than that, I have found it very useful and informative.

Exploring Chakras: Awaken Your Untapped Energy (Exploring Series) by Susan G. Shumsky Average Rating: "Coming from the perspective of a western body/energy worker, I got this book hoping to learn a little about the Eastern tradition of chakras. I certainly got it and I'm sure it's all wonderful...if you want to learn about six of this, and seven of that, and fourteen of these other things, while learning a foreign language and trying to fathom a complex diety system. There's lots of affirmations, diagrams to color, exercises, and plugs for the authors other two books....which I hope I won't regret having purchased as much I did this one! I did love the first few chapters which was all I really needed -- I wasn't looking to take up a theology or mythic tradition, or TM. There are some awesome diagrams tying the body organs and systems to the chakras which I appreciated for pulling a few things together for me, which is why it gets three stars. But from about page 79 on, I felt like I was slipping into a coma and wanted a nap because of the complexities of the system presented here. I was uncomfortable with the 'God' thing in the affirmations, etc., the selling of the 'find a guru or you'll hurt yourself', as well as the 'look out for the bad guys on the astral/underworld planes bit...but hey, that might just be me!This definately isn't for intuitives. But it's absolutely great if you want to dive into Kundalini and yoga and really learn the Eastern Traditions thoroughly. This book will definately help you out there. Just make sure you buy her other books. Yep, one of those, you need the other book Exploring Meditation to do some of the exercises in this one. And you might want to get her Divine Revelation book too. (which sort of puts the kabosh on all the warnings given in this one about doing the work yourself!) Man, I hate when they do that!" Chakra Therapy: For Personal Growth & Healing (Llewellyn's New Age) by Keith Sherwood Average Rating: "Before taking my review to heart, please read the other reviews posted here on Amazon.com. "Jim_Young" really enjoyed it, and seems to have gotten a lot out of it. Here's my take:Because I was raised in a devoutly Christian home, I developed a great "understanding" of spirituality and religious doctrine. At the age of 14, I left the church, feeling that people's personal opinions and blind faith were far too much of the church's foundation. Now an adult, I'm returning to my spiritual roots, but not through the church. I believe very strongly in people's ability to become aware of, and work with, their energy field. For this reason, I enjoy reading about chakras and meditations for healing and working with them.I bought this book in a local book store and immediately dove in, hoping to find a personal connection with the author, and a few new exercises for the chakras. What I found was more than half the book dedicated to Keith Sherwood's spiritual quest, and not much at all about how a person can find their own spiritual center. At one point in Keith's life, he was a Pentecostal preacher... but left the church, feeling unfulfilled. To me, this was a warning. He has been in a position of spiritual leadership for some time, yet doesn't seem to have come to terms with his own spiritual destiny. He takes little pieces of many different religions and infuses them into his own. I think that many true seekers of spirituality do the same thing, and I don't have a problem with it, in and of itself. I do have a problem with those people claiming that their perspective is then the true way.In summary, this book is better read as a spiritualists autobiography than as a guide for meditation and "Chakra Therapy," as the name strongly implies. That being said, proceed at your own discretion." Publisher: Llewellyn Publications | More reviews: amazon.com
Theories of the Chakras: Bridge to Higher Consciousness (Quest Books) by Hiroshi Motoyama Average Rating: "Knowing about the chakras is essential for spiritual development. The chakras are energy centres within the three human bodies: the etheric physical, astral and mental. We ought to learn about these centres as their awakening and unfoldment will be part of every person's growth. (ie. There'll be a lifetime when the disciple or initiate is unable to ignore the chakras.) Chakras are doors to the higher realms, and keys to spiritual powers. There are ancient texts from Eastern religions on this subject. Among the more modern accounts of this are three classical 20th century books: "The Serpent Power" (1918) by Arthur Avalon, "The Chakras" (1926) by CW Leadbeater and "Theories of the Chakras: Bridge to Higher Consciousness" (1981) by Hiroshi Motoyama. Motoyama's book covers the other two and presents yogic exercises as taught by Swami Satyananda. The exercises are postures (Asanas) designed to gradually and safely prepare the physical body for opening of the seven main chakras. The chakras are all linked by energy flow lines throughout the body known as nadis. The nadis are also related to the so-called meridians, which were well known to acupuncturists for thousands of years in China. The meridians are also utilised in Shiatsu, or "Touch for Health" where pressure-points on the body are massaged or pressed. The study by Motoyama discusses the chakras':- 1. Locations in the body(or inner bodies), 2. Appearance, descriptions and symbolisms, 3. Qualities when opened or awakened. In addition Motoyama devised electrical instruments to measure the comparative "charge" around chakras and through the nadis. This part of the book is a bit dry, however the overall text is significant. The interesting part about the books on chakras is that each says the unfoldment of these centres is a precise science for the initiate. Understandably then, the books can only at best imply the techniques for awakening the chakras by leaving many gaps in the descriptions for the disciple to fill. Furthermore, there is always the sensible warning that wrong or premature awakening of chakras can lead to physical, emotional or mental illness or even death. Despite there being now a lot of chakra books around, I think Motoyama's account is the best starting point." Publisher: Quest Books | More reviews: amazon.com

Balancing the Chakras by Maruti Seidman Average Rating: "This is one of the best books I've read. It contains information about everything from what to eat to the different vibrations that you need to become balanced. It includes information about astrology that is easy reading. It made me say "oh, now I get it"! I've used the information from the book in the classroom and for myself personally. It is one of the few books that I rarely lend. I highly recommed it for any age group." Publisher: North Atlantic Books | More reviews: amazon.com

Color and Crystals: A Journey Through the Chakras (Crystals and New Age) by Joy Gardner Average Rating: "Joy Gardner was definitely ahead of her time! This book is the most complete chakra and color resource I have ever found. As a bookstore owner, many books come my way. This is one of the greatest." The Chakras (Quest Book) by Charles Leadbeater Average Rating: "This book is important as a Western account of what is essentially an Eastern concept. The chakras are very important energy centres in humans, and are used in meditation and in cognition of the inner worlds. Leadbeater's book is fairly easy to read, and has really good colour illustrations which have since been often quoted and reproduced many times over the last 70 years. This book was written in the 1920s when the subject was little known in the Western world. Much of the material was obviously obtained from Hinduism, as the chakras are easy to see illustrated in temples in India. I must say I prefer Dr Hiroshi Motoyama's more comprehensive and recent book, but Leadbeater really did pave the way with this one. I recommend it and give it five stars in the historical and useful context. It's a great introduction to the subject." Publisher: Quest Books | More reviews: amazon.com

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth. [Love] always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves.” -- 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 (NIV)
