Zen And The Art Of Pottery

Zen And The Art Of Pottery

by Kenneth R. Beittel

Average Rating:Average rating of 3/5

Pottery is an art of essentials: earth, water, and fire, guided by the human element of spirit. Zen is also concerned with the basics: the training of the mind and body, the ultimate craftsmanship of the soul. Zen and the Art of Pottery explores the links between pottery and Zen, between art, life, and spirit. This unique book is at once a celebration of pottery, the art and its traditions, and a hands-on guide to its methods. The first chapters discuss principles and practice, discipline and tradition—the Zen potter's attitudes to life and work. Later chapters translate those ideas into practical potting techniques, presenting both rudimentary and advanced lessons. The book also includes photographs and descriptions of pots by the author, his Japanese master, his students, and by a number of renowned modern potters.

Touching the Earth: Intimate Conversations with the Buddha

Touching the Earth: Intimate Conversations with the Buddha

by Thich Nhat Hanh

Based on the loving kindness and compassion meditation of the Lotus Sutra, Touching the Earth contains one of the most popular and transformative practices of Thich Nhat Hanh.

Written as a poetic conversation with the Buddha, it is a step-by-step guidebook to the practice of "Beginning Anew." Thich Nhat Hanh describes it as having the capacity to put an end to obstacles brought about by wrongdoing in the past and to give our feeling of the joy of being alive a chance to return. According to many of his students who are deeply touched by this practice, it can help to renew our faith and develop our compassion as it presents an opportunity to heal our relationships through forgiveness and embrace our ancestors, parents, teachers and ourselves.

Beginner's Mind: Three Classic Meditation Practices Especially for Beginners

Beginner's Mind: Three Classic Meditation Practices Especially for Beginners

by Jack Kornfield

Average Rating:Average rating of 4/5

"This was my first audio tape on meditation, and I find it to be a very good introduction and have come back to it every now and then. This audio tape set contains three different talks by three different authors, who all have been long time practioners and teachers of the art of meditation. Each author presents a combination of lectures and guided meditations.

1. Meditation for Beginners - Jack Kornfield. This is a wonderful introduction to meditation, which covers sitting postures, and combines the breathing and bodyscan techniques. I highly recommend this as the first lecture on meditation. I also saw Jack Kornfield's lecture on videotape. He's one of my favorite meditation teachers.

2. Loving Kindness (Metta) Meditation - Sharon Salzberg. I didn't fully appreciate this the first time around, but Metta is a very good meditation for healing. After listening to other tapes on Metta, I developed a greater appreciation for it, and enjoyed the lecture by Ms. Salzberg more the second time around. "Love thy enemy" is a very difficult concept to absorb :-)

3. Meditation in the Zone - Shinzen Young. This is a great approach to killing two birds with one stone: "Get your physical exercise and your mental/spiritual exercise at the same time." I love this the very first time around because it's hard to find time to do both every day. I use the guided meditation part of the tape frequently while jogging on the trail or on the treadmill.

Overall, I found this audio tape set to be a great value ($20 from Amazon). I only complaint is that it's not available in CD audio form in this combination. For more money, you can buy the individual CDs for the talks by Jack Kornfield and Shinzen Young. Because I often listen to the guided meditations periodically, the CDs are much more convenient to use. "

Mindful Living

Mindful Living

by Thich Nhat Hanh

Average Rating:Average rating of 5/5

"I have never been to a retreat with T.N.H., but after listening to this audio book, I feel that I have almost as much information and "vibes" as I would if I had attended one with him.Throughout the recording, the bell is invited, and along with the group, you are invited to breathe mindfully along with them.
