Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism, Revised Edition

Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism, Revised Edition

by John Powers

Average Rating:Average rating of 4.5/5

"This book is not a good "Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism." It
took me about one month to read the book. It is 500 pages.
The author uses big words. There is great detail. For an
intro to Tibetan Buddhism, buy "Open Heart, Clear Mind" by
Thubten Chodron. I learned a lot from this "Comprehensive
Guide to Tibetan Buddhism." But I have read thirty or forty
books on the subject. ..."

No Time to Lose: A Timely Guide to the Way of the Bodhisattva

No Time to Lose: A Timely Guide to the Way of the Bodhisattva

by Pema Chodron

Average Rating:Average rating of 4/5

"The title of this book may intimidate a little. But believe me, this book is a treasure. This is the best of all of Pema Chodron's wonderful books. It is the most practical and helpful of her guides on the Buddhist spiritual path. She doesn't presume we already are Bodhisattvas (saints) -- but this book can remind us of the steps toward that end, no matter who we are. ..."

Healing with Form, Energy, and Light: The Five Elements in Tibetan Shamanism, Tantra, and Dzogchen

Healing with Form, Energy, and Light: The Five Elements in Tibetan Shamanism, Tantra, and Dzogchen

by Tenzin W. Rinpoche

Average Rating:Average rating of 4.5/5

"Before I begin, I must admit limited objectivity in reviewing Bon Lama Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche's latest book "Healing with Form, Energy and Light" (Snow Lion). Because Lama Tenzin has been my gracious teacher for more than two years now, it is tempting to dispense with a certain critical distance. Much of the material in the text is taken from Rinpoche's teachings and small-scale textual resources. ..."

If the Buddha Got Stuck: A Handbook for Change on a Spiritual Path

If the Buddha Got Stuck: A Handbook for Change on a Spiritual Path

by Charlotte Kasl

Average Rating:Average rating of 4.5/5

"Kasl blends Buddhism with mind-body approaches to focus energy and move beyond the overthinking mind to a connection with our emotional body. Whether or not you are familiar with Buddhism this lively book on the art of flowing with life, despite the waves of ups and down, are filled with simple techniques to stay clear of chatter and familiar emotional responses. ..."

Buddhist Religions: A Historical Introduction (Religious Life in History)

Buddhist Religions: A Historical Introduction (Religious Life in History)

by Richard H. Robinson

Average Rating:Average rating of 3.5/5

"I used an earlier edition of this book and the companion Experience of Buddhism in an introductory buddhism course in college, and found (and still find) both to be exremely useful as overviews and wide-ranging sourcebooks for information about the full spectrum of buddhist practice and thought. I'm not sure what grammatical errors the previous reviewer refers to -- perhaps peculiar to the present edition -- but I grew up to be an english teacher and recall no such dramatic flaws and logical inconsistency. ..."

A Flash of Lightning in the Dark of Night: A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life (Shambhala Dragon Editions)

A Flash of Lightning in the Dark of Night: A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life (Shambhala Dragon Editions)

by Dalai Lama

Average Rating:Average rating of 5/5

"In this book the Dalai Lama presents an extended commentary on the The Way of the Bodhisattva, a well-known text of Mahayana Buddhism written by Shantideva, an 8th Century Indian Master. The premise of the Bodhisattva Path or Life is to attain enlightenment in order to serve and ultimately "save" others. ..."

Buddha, Volume 1: Kapilavastu (Buddha)

Buddha, Volume 1: Kapilavastu (Buddha)

by Osamu Tezuka

Average Rating:Average rating of 4.5/5

"Our family read this book and it's companion, The Four Encounters, cover-to-cover, just about non-stop. They were both totally engaging. As a Buddhist, I was wondering what this treatment of the Buddha's life would be like. This is my first exposure to manga style. My only reference point is comic books. ..."

Why the Dalai Lama Matters: His Act of Truth as the Solution for China, Tibet, and the World

Why the Dalai Lama Matters: His Act of Truth as the Solution for China, Tibet, and the World

by Robert Thurman

Average Rating:Average rating of 4/5

"Although the Dalai Lama is almost a household name in the United States, few people have a clear picture of who he is. Robert Thurman has championed the potential of this simple monk to teach the planet how to survive in peace. The ways of war are no longer practical (if they ever were...), and our creative ability to evolve will require a peaceful world. ..."
