Against the Stream: A Buddhist Manual for Spiritual Revolutionaries by Noah Levine Average Rating: "Cutting through the White Noise, Levine just does not just explain the basic tenents but applies them to the lives we all lead. Dealing with sexual temptations? "Sexual suffering is caused not by the energy itself, but by our own inability to understand and skillfully deal with that energy." He suggests ways to do just that, all the while adhering to Sid's(short hand for the Buddha) blessing that while his finger may point us to the moon, his finger is not the moon. ..."
Light Comes Through: Buddhist Teachings on Awakening to Our Natural Intelligence by Dzigar Kongtrul Average Rating: "Light Comes Through offers just that...light! It answers all those questions that never seem to have direct answers concerning jealousy, relationships, insecurity, and where buddhas come from. After reading this book, I took a step forward on my path. :O) Thank you Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche. You have served well. I wish you never ending happiness and a long life. ..."
The Diamond Cutter: The Buddha on Managing Your Business and Your Life by Geshe Michael Roach Average Rating: "and I don't end up speechless often.
Since I started reading this book 4 days ago I retold the basics of its lessons to half a dozen friends, and they have been adding their names to the waiting list to borrow it.
This book came into my life at the time when I already reached the level of spiritual understanding needed to put it into practice. ..."
If the Buddha Married: Creating Enduring Relationships on a Spiritual Path by Charlotte Kasl Average Rating: "There is lots of good stuff here, but it's not Buddhism. One of the best parts is the section on how to be a good listener. As a man (yes, a generalization is coming up), I sometimes am not the best listener in the world. The author's discussion of listening is very well done, and can help both men and women deal with that sometimes awkward period at the end of the day when someone wants to describe how horrible her co-worker is, etc. ..."
Buddhist Scriptures (Penguin Classics) Average Rating: "This is a very useful anthology for students of Buddhism. In addition to highly readable translations of selected ancient texts filled with descriptions and advice; it also includes many instructive fables and tales, including "Maitreya describes the Future" and "A King gives away his Head."
Of particular note is the predecessor to the biblical story of the loaves and fishes -- it is the story of how a single portion of alms fed 84,000 sravakas and 12,000 bodhisattvas, and still the food did not run out. ..."
No Death, No Fear by Thich Nhat Hanh Average Rating: "Perhaps because I read this book shortly after the sudden, unexpected death of someone close to me, and after Thich Nhat Hanh's recent "day of mindfulness" here in Boulder, it touched me more deeply than any of Thay's previous books. In NO DEATH, NO FEAR, Thich Nhat Hanh succeeds once again at reducing a complex subject into a simple Buddhist teaching. ..."
Essence of the Heart Sutra: The Dalai Lama's Heart of Wisdom Teachings by The Dalai Lama Average Rating: "As a geographically-isolated Buddhist, I belong to a local Daoist study group. I chose the Heart Sutra to review for the study group, as a work appealing to both traditions. Having reviewed available commentaries to prepare for the presentation, I found the Dalai Lama's "Essence of the Heart Sutra" to be an exceptionally insightful treatise of this most deceptively simple, as well as shortest, of the major sutras. ..."
Happiness Is an Inside Job: Practicing for a Joyful Life by Sylvia Phd Boorstein Average Rating: "Dr. Boorstein books and essays are like a franchise. You know what to expect before you even open the cover. However, like individual franchise locations, some are better than others. Her current book should win the franchise of the month award.
Dr. Boornstein strikes just the right balance between conveying several fundamental Buddhist principles from original or near sources, then describes them very well in her own words. ..."
Practicing Peace in Times of War by Pema Chodron Average Rating: "This small book (95 small format pages of text) reflects Pema's prior works. It contains 6 of her lectures edited by Sandy Boucher (author of "Dancing in the Dharma" & "Turning the Wheel"). The chapter titles are provocative (e.g. "Compassionate Abiding & Positive Insecurity"), but the Table of Contents is numbered incorrectly (the small Roman numerals in the T of C are Arabic numbered in the book so each chapter is low by 14 pages in the T of C). ..."
